The event was opened by Prof Dr Ilona Pálné Kovács, President of the Hungarian Regional Science Association (MRTT), after which Dr Szilárd Rácz, Head of the Transdanubian Scientific Department of the HUN‑REN Centre for Economic and Regional Studies, Institute of Regional Studies (KRTK‑RKI), introduced the speaker.
Dr Szilágyi shared preliminary findings from two ongoing studies carried out jointly with Dr Réka Horeczki. The first focuses on a multidimensional comparison of the two “newest” Schengen zones – the Hungarian–Croatian and Hungarian–Romanian border sections – while the second is a geographically broader yet thematically more focused project covering all Hungarian Schengen borders. The lecture analysed economic, social and infrastructural reintegration prospects, highlighting cross‑border cooperation and the integration potential of local communities.
After the presentation, researchers from the participating institutes – KRTK‑RKI, MRTT and the National Strategic Research Institute (NSKI) – present both on‑site and online, offered their comments and suggestions for further research.
The event was organised by the Transdanubian Research Department of the Institute for Regional Studies, Centre for Economic and Regional Studies (HUN‑REN), the South Transdanubian Section of the Hungarian Regional Science Association and the Tourism Geography Sub‑committee of the Pécs Academic Committee.
